I think that in this day and age of globalization and international integration, learning more languages has become more and more necessary. It's already happening in Europe. Do you notice that most Europeans are polyglots?

Could you please precise your question? I am not sure of its meaning. Do you mean: - "Is it important for humanity as a whole to keep various different languages, instead of trying to make everybody use the same language?" - "Is it important for a single person to learn different languages, instead of just one?" - "Is the fact that some people have different languages than mine important for my personal life?" - something completely different? -------------- ADDED --------------------- So after clearing the question, I'll assume the first one. 1) I am not a language professional, but I have a lot of interest for languages. I know quite good French, German and English, and I had some good training in Spanish and somewhat less in Italian and Romanian. And I learned old Latin and old Greek at school. Moreover, I made some explorations in the structure of some other languages, without getting very far in learning them. And with this basis, I understand a lot by reading various romanic or germanic languages. 2) For the goal of communication, it is very important for us that some international communication languages exist. Some would rather use only one (English), others such as the French insist that there should be more. I also think that a little more variation could be useful (I am French). 3) Even if we probably will not be able to save all the existing languages, I think that it can give us a lot if we conserve many of them in the future, because they show us the many possibilities that we have to do things. Imagine that the French, the Italians, the Germans and the English would have spoken all exactly the same language, different schools of thinking, even different cultures could not have developed and each one of them given their particular contribution to human culture. And of course, very different languages have produced even more specific cultures (Chinese, Japanese, Sanskrit). The language is not the only factor that influences a culture, but it is a very important one. The inconscious mind is structured like a language, and the language structures our thinking. A good starting points for an information about languages would be here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language
