Anime itself dosen't have to come from japan, but to be cosidered "anime" it must be drawn in the anime art style. (This art style originates from Japan).

I've heard it said and I agree with it myself that it's only truly animé if it's from a Japanese studio. And 'from' doesn't just refer to where it was produced/drawn, the whole thing needs to be true to it original roots right back to the writing. Anything not done to this ideal is jumping on the bandwagon so to say to get the popularity and fan base of the animé/manga societies and that just dilutes the meaning of the words. It's bad enough saying animé instantly means "cartoons" or "porn" to most people who haven't seen any of it but putting things like Disney in there as well just doesn't sit well with me. I mean SpongeBob?!?! (part of Tokyopop's Cine-Manga line up) Sorry but that's just not manga in ANY form.

Wait let me check with dictionary.com... Hah here, "a Japanese style of motion-picture animation, characterized by highly stylized, colorful art, futuristic settings, violence, and sexuality." I just loved dictionary.com in these situation. The keyword here is Japanese. Typically any animated series that comes of Japan or heavily Japanese induced influence are called animes. Others would be just classified as animations. Got your answer now?
