What is the difference betweens 'rights' and 'freedoms?'

A right is something that you have by virtue of being a living human. Freedom is something that is granted by society. For example, in the US we recognize freedom of speech as a right. Therefore, the constitution prohibits the government from infringing on this right. On the other hand, permission to operate a motor vehicle is granted by the government to those that can show that they can do so responsible and safely. You don't have a right to drive a car, but the government may grant you the freedom to do so.
