I think there for about 12 hours after 9/11/01, we were. I'm afraid it's going to take an even larger attack against us to really bring us together again. We were united during WWII cuz everyone did their part. EVERY family was effected it seemed; someone in their family was in the war. Or most of the men were gone so the women had to go to work in the factories. Bottom line, since everyone had to contribute, everyone felt like they were part of the effort, the solution, and the team. After 9/11, we sent our best overseas. But as a percentage of the population of the US, we didn't send NEAR as many to the Middle East as we sent to Europe for WWII. In other words, the common American doesn't feel like part of the solution, or the team. Now we're just bystanders, and all we have time to do is criticize the ones who are doing the work. As if we could do it better. What a bunch of arrogant idiots we can be.
