Possibly - but human nature. You can see, and understand, athletic achievements even if you cannot do them yourself. If someone wins a race, breaks a record, or scores a goal, you can understand what they have done. If someone has a remarkable insight into a classical author, makes a discovery in quantum mechanics, or writes a fantastic report on a business trend, they can generally be judged only by their peers. Precisely because it is simple, athletics and sport are easier to boast about.

It appeals to the lowest common denominator which means that it includes everyone. Those that can't play, can root, can be spectators and can appreciate the jock's talent. The same cannot be said for the brain.

I think at the higher grades you may be right, but have you seen how many, "My child is an honor roll student at Our Lady of Perpetual Agony School for the Vertically Challenged"? bumper stickers there are out there? I never see a "My son totally smoked a quarterback on a blitz in the last 10 seconds of the game!"
