Yes, and yes. But I prefer it without the ham chunks.

But - since my fiance doesn't like it, I don't make it at home.

I hate peas but I will eat my delicious split pea soup. I let the peas sit in a pan of water for a couple of hours then put a ham bone with lots of meat left on it and my husband likes it when I grate carrots in it but I hate carrots.

Being Belgian I think I've got this soup running through my veins. I love it and make a really good one. ANd I always make croutons to go in it, jut like my mom taught me:-)

I also now make a pea soup with an ethnic twist. It has cumin and other strange spices in it and rice is added near the end. It is wonderful!!! I actually prefer it to the regular Pea Soup I grew up with.

Mmmmm split pea soup is one of my favorite things in the world! That with a nice, fresh loaf of home baked French bread.

Oh, I wish I had some right now!

People who won't try it because they don't like how it looks (or expect it to taste like fresh/frozen peas) don't know what they're missing. You've got to put ham hocks in it, though. That's very important.

I LOVE split pea soup and have it once a week in Winter. i put a smoked ham hock in while it is cooking in the slow cooker. I shred the meat off the hock and add it to the soup. I also add some franfurters (must be very good quality). I put a tablespoon of vinegar on the soup when serving; it breaks up the thickness and adds a nice flavour. I think that I will have split pea soup tonight; I have some in the freezer.

When it's made right AND it tastes terrific, I LOVE split pea soup.

If you're thinking about canned pea soup, forget it.

THE BEST pea soup I ever had was made with the assistance of my daughter. We had a terrific time, soaking the peas overnight -
s-l-o-w-l-y cooking the peas with those delicious ham hocks and pieces of Virginia ham.

THE MESSIEST part: passing the not-quite-finished soup through the food mill (Sorry folks, this was WAY before food processors and those hand-held "mixing wands").

    The finished soup was magnificent!

Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed answering it!

There's a component in peas that prevents pregnacy! But I love pea soup with lots of ham or sausage in it! And the garlic croutons floating on top is nice!

Yes, but only if made with the broth from a very good hambone, onion, celery, carrot, and sage.

That same broth is even better, made into potato soup instead of pea soup, and the potato soup doesn't - how shall I say - inflate the intestine.

The only time I like it is when I'm spitting it at a priest who is performing an exorcism. Unfortunately, that doesn't happen often...

Ok, ok...to seriously answer your question, I've never been able to bring myself to even try it. It looks and smells awful.

Split pea soup with ham or ham hocks and chopped onion and carrot. I make a pot of it the week after Easter, or whenever I've baked a ham, to use up the ham on the bone, since the rest of it is either all gone or has been sliced up for sandwiches.

Love it. Really doesn't matter what recipe I use, its always good. Whether its ham or bacon or sausage, plain peas or full of carrots and potatoes, seasoned with bay or marjoram or onions, its all good.

Pease Porridge Hot, pease porridge cold, pease porridge in the pot nine days old.

I like it hot, I like it cold, I like it in the pot nine days old.
