  • I think they are made to have a long shelf life if you keep it ON the shelf. Mine is sitting on the very edge of the table and it's fallen many times, but it's never broke. Just try not to push it off the table. You could always put some plasticine there, under the legs, or you could always glue it.
  • I don't think it is intentional, but it is the result of phones selling on features not reliability. When people are choosing phones, they treat weight as a negative. So manufacturers have an incentive to save weight wherever they can - and sometimes that saving reduces reliability. Miniaturisation of physical components always tends to impact reliability. Of course, if they go too far, they get too many returns. But since people tend to upgrade their phones every couple of years anyway, they can get away with pretty low standards. If you go for a big, clunky phone with not too many features, it will probaly be more reliable.
  • I think cell phones are no longer made like they used to be. The older cell phones (like the big motorola's and the nokia's) were actually quite dependable and durable. Cell phones lately are definitely more flimsy. My experience is that they won't last more than two years (if you're lucky) without something going wrong with them.
  • I have to change phones about once a year. By the end of a year, the battery doesn't hold a charge very well and buying a new battery is almost the same price as buying a new phone. By the time a year rolls around, there are zillions of new phones that have more features than a you could ever use.
