I think it's origin maybe has to do with a boxing or fighting term. That is, when one of the people involved in the fight pulls down a punch, or doesn't deliver the final blow as hard as he could or should. Most staged fights at the movies or performing require the participants to pull their punches. That phrase according to this: http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/pull+any+punches means: "To speak in an honest way without trying to be kind"

I believe pulling punches is a boxing term which means you hold back and don't hit with all your strength. It was more than likely something boxers did to draw out a fight and make it last longer so people would feel like they got their money's worth. The phrase "doesn't pull any punches," has come to mean going at something full force--not holding back.
