  • Depends on your reference. Official Eiffel Tower website: 1665 steps.. That entire website, btw, is written in French. Whose bright idea was that? Isn't it enough that Frenchmen were the architects and engineers? And Eiffel, a Frenchman, was the contractor. Had the thing built in France, of all places! Do we have to read about it in French, too? http://www.tour-eiffel.fr/ According to that well-known fellow, Birnbaum, 1789 steps. Joseph Harriss, 1671. "Others" (unnamed) say 1652. Why the diff? 1789 is 137 more than 1652 - lots of steppage. Maybe some oversteppage. Who is Birnbaum anyway? Where are those "Others"? I can only conclude that the true number (and there's bound to be one) is close to the official step count of 1665 and Joseph Harriss' 1671. At least Mr. Harriss gave his whole name, indicating a sense of "I accept responsibility." He's no anonymous "Other". http://www.endex.com/gf/buildings/eiffel/eiffelfacts.html Another site leads to yet a different number: "On this inauguration day, Eiffel climbed the 1710 steps leading to the third level of the tower before unfurling the French flag and hearing the 21 canon salute marking the occasion." Does that mean 1710 steps to the top? Or just the number Eiffel climbed on inauguration day. Watch out for subtle implication. http://www.group-trotter.net/france/places/eiffel/eiffel.html So, officially, 1665. Hope for 1650, be ready for 1800. Bonne chance! Edit on 10/27/2005: To Grandma Roses, Good catch. Thanks for the correct "bonne chance". The right version sure looks a lot better.
