  • Apply for government assistance until you get back on your feet. Depending on where you live there are programs for single mothers trying to get in the work force that will give you financial assistance.
  • One word: Wow. Well, what I would do in your situation is sell the car, head to a Service Canada office, and look at the job postings. Take the highest paying one immediately to secure a source of income. Try to schedule it for certain days of the week, then head back to the office and look for a second small job. This secures two sources of income. I would ship the kids off to a family member for a few weeks while I get things in order. I don't know if you rent, own, lease, etc. but money needs to be secured for shelter first and foremost - more important than food. Your kids deserve shelter. If you have money for shelter but not food, head to the food bank until you can afford both. Stay upbeat, stay positive, and work hard. I don't have kids and therefore can't imagine what it would be like, but that's what I would do in that situation. I would also cancel the internet until my finances were in order. Free internet is available at the service canada office. If you don't live in Canada then you need to find the local equivalent (don't know if one exists in the US). Best of luck and please let me know if I can offer any more advice or answer anymore questions.
  • If you're in the US, the govt programs WILL give emergency assistance, so the wait is VERY short. It doesn't matter how YOU feel about receiving "Assistance" it MATTERS to your kids to stay healthy and ALIVE. Heck, I was 47 and had food assistance for 2 months while unemployed (I am a male BTW) and while I felt a bit...Dirty...I knew it was a good move on my part. Today, I'm unemployed (Second layoff in 3 years!) and looking for work, but have unemployment to rely on for a bit. Best of luck
  • A lot of people end up moving back in with their parents if that's possible. Horrid option, but sometimes necessary. In extreme cases some automotive shops will fix your car and let you pay on a schedule if the cost of parts and labor isn't beyond their comfort zone. It has to be a situation where they feel they can afford to lose the money if you don't pay. Never pay some guy who is handy to do it. Too much of a risk.
  • There is a program with the department of human services to help fix your car. They will give you a car repair voucher. You must hold a valid driving license also you must own the vehicle. I hope this will help you.
