Why is it so expensive to get your computer fixed compared to other things?

Depends on where you take it and what's wrong. It's specialized work and so some places charge more per hour than say an auto mechanic. Also if there's a hardware problem and something needs to be replaced the components can be expensive.

Today more than ever, it's all about the knowledge economy... There'll always be a minority of people who have the skills required to tackle more complex PC problems. The ratio of skilled technicians compared to your average, occasional-usage-bought-the-pc-to-email-and-word-process people (who neither know nor care how their computer's innards work) is always going to be huge, so people immediately look for a way to monetise their knowledge. Bingo, PC repairers. The Geek Squad seem to be doing alright.
