  • Depends on where you take it and what's wrong. It's specialized work and so some places charge more per hour than say an auto mechanic. Also if there's a hardware problem and something needs to be replaced the components can be expensive.
  • Today more than ever, it's all about the knowledge economy... There'll always be a minority of people who have the skills required to tackle more complex PC problems. The ratio of skilled technicians compared to your average, occasional-usage-bought-the-pc-to-email-and-word-process people (who neither know nor care how their computer's innards work) is always going to be huge, so people immediately look for a way to monetise their knowledge. Bingo, PC repairers. The Geek Squad seem to be doing alright.
