Using a diaphragm for birth control is 86 to 94 percent effective if used properly. A diaphragm is a dome-shaped cup inserted into the vagina, filled with spermicide to cover the cervix opening. To be most effective, it should be inserted two hours before intercourse and left in six to eight hours afterward.
