because men design these dang things!

Some do. I have seen side by sides with lights in freezer and also chest type freezers with a light. Why there is not one in all freezers I do not know.
-
Of course there is.

Mine have lights in both

A freezer is for suspended animation as in deep sleep, as in cryonics - don't want to take a chance of waking anyone as in "shut that darn light off"- more long term. A frige is just meant to maintain a chill and keep and display what is there for the nunmerous times the door is open - short term storage. Mostly it was done just because it is cheaper without but as noted it is more common to have them in both in the last few years. +5

Freezers work better when they're tightly packed, fridges work better when there's circulation/open space. So a light in your freezer probably won't travel very far. Also, if you have midnight munchies, you may have to explore the fridge, but you probably know exactly where the ice cream is in the freezer :D

Lightbulbs are hot. They don't help freeze things.
