    Great Answer

    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

The lungs are vital organs, yet it is hard to avoid exposure to harmful pollutants each day. Your lungs might come in direct contact with toxic pollutants every time you breathe. Toxins build up in the lungs from smog, cigarette smoke, exhaust fumes and myriad other sources of contaminants. Damage to lung tissue causes chronic problems such as asthma and bronchitis as well as more serious diseases. Use the following methods to clean your lungs on a regular basis.

    Diet

Make dietary adjustments to clean out your lungs. Drink at least 64 fluid ounces of water each day to stay well hydrated. Avoid dairy products such as cheese and milk that might produce excess mucus in the lungs. Eat foods with anti-inflammatory properties that reduce mucus buildup. The best foods for this are onions, garlic and spicy peppers. Season foods using ginger and cinnamon, natural lung stimulants with anti-congestion properties. Fruits with bioflavonoids also facilitate cleansing of the lungs. Eat apricots, peaches and plums. Other foods rich in chlorophyll such as spirulina and barley might also help clean out the lungs.

    Supplements

Take a variety of vitamins and herbal supplements as part of your lung detox regimen. Antioxidants are key for lung function, so take supplement pills containing vitamins C, A and E as well as selenium. Consume mullein, an herbal supplement used as an expectorant and for repairing the mucus membranes of the respiratory system. It can be taken in tea or tablet form. Other herbs with similar qualities include hyssop, horehound and thyme.

    Respiratory Exercises

Perform breathing exercises regularly to clean and strengthen your lungs. Of course, high-intensity aerobic exercises such as running and biking are some of the best ways to open up our lungs and clear out any buildup. The lungs naturally eliminate pollutants when you start breathing heavily with exercise, leading to frequent expectoration.

There is also a simple breathing exercise you can try at home without breaking a sweat. Sit in a relaxed position on the floor, preparing yourself for a sort of meditative session. Make sure your posture is good, keeping your back straight and chin up to allow for maximum lung capacity. Breathe in very slowly and very deeply until you can no longer take in any more air. Pause for a second, and then slowly blow the air back out. Take as long as possible to fill and empty your lungs with each breath. When breathing out, push all the air you can out of your lungs to the point that it feels like there is nothing left. Inhale and exhale in this calm manner for five minutes each day after waking up and right before you go to bed. This will gradually help your lungs become stronger and increase oxygen flow to your body.

    Additional Advice

See a doctor if you suspect you have respiratory problems or your lungs continue to bother you for more than a few days. You might have contracted a illness or developed a chronic lung condition. Seek medical attention to find out what additional treatment options are best for you.
