  • One word answer from me today (excluding this!) No!
  • Absoultely NOT..........
  • There are a couple reasons why this can't happen, at least in the foreseable future. First of all, the EU is an organization of EUROPEAN countries. Morocco resides in the northwest corner of Africa. The EU is concerned first and foremost with the economic and political policies of EUROPE. This is pretty definitive in terms of countries which are or may become members. http://europa.eu/about-eu/27-member-countries/index_en.htm Second, though a constitutional monarchy, Morocco has a ways to go with respect to their democratic transition. It IS a short term goal for Morocco, but they aren't there. Toss in lots of other things having to to with human rights issues and you have quite a hump to get over before membership could be considered on this basis. Morocco did apply to houn the European Communities in 1987 (before the EU came into existance). It was rejected, as King Mohammed VI expected it would, on the basis that Morocco was not considered a European country. There has been an unofficial attempt to renew their application to the EU a while back, based on some improvements in the above mentioned issues. The EU's official stance is "...we already have a very, very close relationship wit Morocco, and we're studying giving them even more advanced status." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morocco_and_the_European_Union
