  • A somewhat loaded question. The professor didn't 'force' the class to read the poem, any more than he 'forces' them to study any literature. I don't know the context of the course in which the poem was discussed, but certainly the main theme of Sharon Old's poem is not religion per se. Apart from the fact that it mentions part of the body not normally described in poetry, I cannot see any reason why a class of adults or near-adults should not study the poem.
