If one did not wish to center his/her timeline around the birth of Jesus, what do you think he/she would consider the current year to be (and none of that Common Era junk)? Why do you think so?

I would think it is the generally accepted year. It isn't all based around the supposed birth of someone, contrary to what you may have been told.

Before the bolshevik takeover in Russia, that country used the creation year. Russia switched to common year to be on the same calendar as the rest of the world, yet the enforced official religion was atheism. Kemal Atatürk changed to the common year calendar for Turkey even though that country is 99 per cent islamic. It is convenience and tradition by this time, as much as particular belief. Besides, the estimate that brought about A.D. years turned out to be at least six years off, and with the actual birth of Jesus in the northern summer instead of the winter.
