Both presidents and prime ministers are heads of the executive branch of the government of a country. Prime ministers are found in governments with a parliament. The main difference is that a prime minister is the leader of the party with the most representatives in parliament, and a president is elected indirectly or directly by the voting public of that country. For example, if the Labour Party has the most elected members in the U.K.'s parliament, then the prime minister is the leader of the Labour Party. Since it's known in advance who the party leader is, voting for a local candidate by party in a parliamentary election is tantamount to voting for the party leader as head of the government. Some parliamentary democracies have a prime minister and a president. In that case, the president's position is primarily ceremonial.

so then what's the difference in power? Vladimir Putin is no longer the president of Russia, but he is now the prime minister, and still seems to be running the country.

A Prime Minister is usually a member of both the executive and legislative branches of government. A President is a member of the executive branch exclusively. In fact, under most constituions (especially those based on the US Constitution), members of the executive branch are specifically prohibited from holding either legislative or judicial office at the same time.

It largely depends on the country you're talking about. Broadly speaking a prime minisiter is not a head of state, whereas a president is. Politically Presidents tend to have much more autonomy than Prime Ministers. But it really depends on the specific country. Depending on where you are in the world the words might mean the same thing or might really mean dictator, emperor, puppet, sex pest or something else.

In a parlimentary type of government, people elect members of parliment. The leader of the majority party forms a government with the leader serves as the prime minister. The president is elected separately and serve as head of government but without much power. In UK, the Queen is the head of government.
