I do think it should be an option to present it just to the teacher. It proves you still have the oral skills. Some people are very introverted and unable to speak in front of groups, and this should be recognized.

When I was in school (1950s and 60s), there were a few kids in some of my classes who were so shy about standing up in front of the class to make any kind of presentation, that some of them would cry, shake like a leaf in a thunderstorm, or vomit. Those kids failed the class. Allowing a student to "opt out" of class presentations is unfair to the other students and shouldn't be permitted. What is fair for one student, should be fair for ALL students. +5

I vote for mandatory. I was required to do so, quite against my wishes, and I am glad of it now. I have never had difficulties speaking to groups, although presently I have no occasion to.
