Down in what way,it all depends on who you ask,I'm a male and I have a uplifting personality.But men sometimes express insensitivity when it comes to women,they may say the wrong or inappropriate things when they don'nt really mean it.-:)LOL

I guess because we depend on our feedback from them so much. We are sensitive to their opinions of our looks, smarts, fashion, character etc.

They can only do this if you give them the power to do so. I don't, so I don't have that burden to deal with such people. If you have friends that make you feel good about yourself, they are thebest ones to be around, not people that bring you down.

Maybe because (for example) straight girls would want a guy to say they're pretty. If they don't, the girl is hurt because thats what she wanted.
