By and large, most people prefer to shed responsibility. By conforming they do just that. It takes the anguish of having to make decisions "out of their hands".

Primarily to survive...if you want something I have you will need to conform to the requirements of that transaction and from there sets of mutual expectations will develop. Conformity is a perquisite of civil societies and even more extreme and less mutually acceptable levels of conformity are required in societies ruled by dictatorships, Monarchies and religious leaders.

That's how we define normal, the way most people act. If you do not conform, you are abnormal.

To short answer? To fit in. Nobody (subconsciously or not) wants to feel secluded or like an outcast. It's a human need to feel like we are in a group.

If you read the Book the Lucifer Effect by Dr Zimbardo, you will find out. It is an awesome book.
Human beings are highly complex, ambiguous, paradoxical, ambivalent, hypocritical and oxymoronic in nature. We both want to be loved and yet want to do our own thing. We want to have our cake and eat it.
Ultimately people want to be loved and want to feel they belong. People will conform if it is their interests to conform rather than not to conform, there are no other options they can think of, measured against the strength of their morals, and they do not know how to challenge the others. People who have strong interests to conform, have situational morals and no other options will conform.
So if I have a job which pays me £100,000 a year, have a family with big bills to pay, and I see something untoward at work, I will first consider my morals. If they are situational and I must keep my job and I do not know how to challenge what is going on, I will conform too. If my boss asks me to do something untoward, then I may do the same. I do not want to risk losing my job, my home, my family and my livelihood.
The fear of being rejected is so great in us that we want to behave such we conform.
Ultimately if we are rejected from society we will die : we will have no food, no water, no shelter. So we seek means to be accepted to society. The degree to which we are prepared to be rejected is the degree to which we will not conform.

Everyone conforms no matter what they say; it's human nature. If you aren't conforming to main stream culture you're conforming to another culture or group of some sort.
