Perhaps because all who have their pictures taken (or painted in her case) are continually barked at to smile as a smile (to most) is more pleasent to look at than one's normal face bearing one's actual emotions which may or may not be happy.

Leonardo Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa on a piece of pine wood in the year 1506. Never in the history of Art has one painting been so admired. He recorded in his notebooks the records of model sittings; but nowhere can be found any records of the Mona Lisa model sitting. Why is that? Who posed for him? Dr. Lillian Schwartz of Bell Labs suggests that Leonardo painted himself, and was able to support her theory by analyzing the facial features of Leonardo's face and that of the famous painting, She digitized both the self-portrait of the artist and the Mona Lisa. She flipped the self portrait and merged the two images together using a computer. She noticed the features of the face aligned perfectly! Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting has inspired romantic songs and art lovers the world over, who become captivated by the Mona Lisa's enigmatic smile. The portrait also intrigued Margaret Livingstone, a neurobiologist at Harvard Medical School who studies the human visual system. When Livingstone blurred the face with a filter, the Mona Lisa looked as if she were smiling cheerfully. But homing in on the fine detail gave her a more demure expression. So Livingstone says that in his painting, da Vinci achieved an unusual effect: the Mona Lisa's smile changes depending on where you look.

Because on some level she must have known that no one looking at the painting would have even the slightest idea as to why she was smiling, and that for centuries to come, people would look at that painting of her and ask "Why was Mona Lisa smiling?" and that none of them would ever know for sure. And I guess she must have found that idea quite amusing, I know I do... <Smiles enigmatically>
