Crime doesn't pay,but surviving the streets is hard,and unless you've been there,then you can't understand. +5

No, basically they don't. All too many kids think that are an exception the rule, immortal etc. The fact that crime doesn't pay, that we (the middle classes) pay the police to make sure crime doesn't pay, takes time to learn. In in the very short term, the apparent rewards are great. In every generation, a few percent have to learn the hard way that crime doesn't pay.

they are groomed/conditioned, either knowingly or unknowingly by others in their environment...immediate gratification (they don't believe they have a future so why plan for it or why work for a future payoff)...sense of entitlement...narcissisism...it can be related to brain damage...it can be motivated by a need (need to belong, need for drugs/food). there are many reasons...read "Inside the Criminal Mind" by Dr. Samenow...

Everyone has thier talents, forté, and preferences. That's why, I suppose, they have the name: career criminal.
-
With regard to many in gangs they don't believe in the long run. People dying from violence is part of the picture. People in jail is part of the picture.
-
Many of them are following in their parents' footsteps. A parole officer friend of mine told me that, in some areas, going to prison for the first time is a kind of rite of passage for boys, while for girls it's getting her first client.
-
For some, it's all they know. They grew up around it, and in it, its all round them. The lure of easy money and to be accepted. For some in gangs they have family members in it as well, and are expected to carry on the tradition. If they end up in jail it is a status symbol.

A lot of reasons. Acceptance, desperation, confusion. In the hood, kids don't get 'allowance' and they damn sure can't get a job, but they need money like everyone else. It starts with petty drug dealings, then once you're in that circle of criminals you start doing other crimes like robbery. Then, it's only a matter of time before you start being at odds with one of the 'criminals' you hang out with, and it leads to somebody getting shot. Before they know it, they're 20 years old facing prison time and they don't even know how it all happened. It's messed up because if these kids had something to do or had some self-esteem they wouldn't go down that path.

There are those who for some reason believe that they can acquire the Fast and Easy buck and not get caught ; although the prisons and jails are filled with people who THOUGHT the same thing ... GREED fills their souls and creats a passion for that EASY money ... as they see those better off thean they are and they get jealous etc and figure to get $$$ the easy way ... +5

Crime doesn't pay? some of the wealthiest people in the world are criminals.
-
They can't see themselves doing anything else. Many are unaware of their own capabilities and intelligence. No direction and support. Can't see past today and their environment which can be a very limited world, sometimes a few square miles which they rarely leave.
-
because that lifestyle is glorified in popular culture these days.
-
Some don't care, some have no choice, others know no different,..its a very sad world we live in Suby..every youngsters reason will be a different one..many don't *choose* this lifestyle and find it impossible to get out of..
-
Crime does pay for some, very well, and most youngsters drawn to this lifestyle will hope that they are one of the lucky few that really strike rich. Some do not want to be controlled and take orders from someone in a nine to five job and would rather set their own hours and be their own boss. Some just because the danger is attractive.

Maybe they aspire to be a politician or even the president of the country. Ben Bernanke's job sounds pretty lucrative, as well as criminal. Its no secret that the government is the biggest criminal of all time, profiting from everyone's misery, but whether it pays in the long run is yet to be seen. Depends on if the people have another revolution or not. Could be that the flouride and the constant barrage of propaganda fed to the public will prevent that. In the meantime, crimes like selling drugs and such are simply ways to make money, when jobs are scarce and almost impossible to get. The only guaranteed income these days is welfare.
-
Gotta be economics and education - or rather *lack* of same that dictates that kinda behaviour, no? ;-)

Crime pays in the short time.I have seen an entire village doing smuggling of contraband for the big guns. These folks went on to become politicians and later godfathers also. Some of them are funding the film industry also. They have dummy candidates now as a front in politics. Why do you think there will be woman reservations in the seats now? Crime is a money making and ambitious career also which influences the young minds with easy money and fantastic growth as a career criminal.Crime, politics, nefarious business, black money, racing, gambling, money business, and a lot more things are dependent on criminals.Where will they fill up the vacancies in that field? These also have their HR head hunters looking for promising youngsters for a career in their domains.+
-
because they do not look to the future. they see the quick payoff and either do not see the consequences or choose not to see them. There is always going to be the regret of being caught, but if they are not caught there will be no regret. short answer: they are very short sighted

It more looks like a police tag-line to say crime doesn't pay in long run than to be the truth! If you know the rules of the game you can get to the places that you can't even dream about by having a monthly paid job! Those who get caught and go to jail are the beginners or the proteges. The real criminals are most of the time in a safe win-win situation. Maybe those youths who enter the world of crime hope to reach to the top places some day. However before you can hit the big time there are many risks that you have to deal with and also if you get involved too much then other gangsters won't let you out of it.
