As Catholics, we are to obstain on Fridays during Lent from the flesh of warm-blooded animals.

Fish & seafood = cold-blooded, therefore acceptable and edible on such days.

Some people don't consider fish meat; which I have never understood. I think that the sacrifice for Lent ought to be just that; a sacrifice. In modern countries like the U.S. we have meat available everyday and going with out it on Friday's during Lent is'nt a sacrifice. And having a big fish fry or crawfish boil like we have here in Louisiana is definitely not a sacrifice. If you want to fast for religious reasons then do what is meaningful to you not what is popular. Otherwise your just going hungry and it will mean nothing.

Of course it is but it's not a mammal so lots of people consider it acceptable to eat based upon these grounds.

Yes. A fish is an animal therefore has meat.

Katie, what I understood for not eating meat on Fridays during lent, is something else. What I understood, is that, it is forbidden not to have sex on these days during lent.

meat is muscle that is used by an animal, no matter the temperature of the blood that flows through it. So, next time you see a fish swimming remember that it is meat.

To a vegetarian fish is meat and thus something they will not it. In the Catholic tradition fish is not considered meat and is acceptable to eat on Fridays during Lent.

Old post, but no one really seemed to know the answer so; The Catholic Church is not saying that fish is not "meat". Or that it's not muscle that the animal uses to move. Or that temperature of its blood has anything to do with it. People, there is no huge mystery here.
The idea is to make a sacrifice of SOME KIND on certain days of remembrance. The Church has chosen the consumption of the meat of land animals as the accepted sacrifice. But, throughout the year, the Christian can also choose his/her own form of sacrifice on Fridays. Sometimes its complete fasting altogether. Or acts of charity. From the time where the abstinence from red meats and poultry was instituted, it was likely a real, genuine sacrifice to give them up for any period of time. They likely weren't as readily available as they are now and were considered quite an important protein source to have. Or perhaps VERY readily available when other things weren't. (don't know this for sure. Just theorizing) So, either way you'd be giving up something important to you. A real sacrifice.
The fish has always had Christian connotations. Fish is allowed because it's an ancient symbol for Christ himself. We've all heard of the Jesus Fish, right?
