To get a platinum record, a million albums must be sold. Albums can also be multi-platinum albums. To get a gold record isn't as hard. The album only has to sell 500,000 copies. These figures are the ones used in the United States to determine the status of a record.

A distinction between a single and an album has to be made. The amounts also vary from country to country depending on the size of the market. Currently in Finland you have to sell 5000 singles for a gold disc, and 10000 singles for a platinum disc. For albums (Still talking about Finland), you have to sell 15000 for a gold disc, 30000 for a platinum disc, 60000 for double platinum, 90000 for triple platinum and so on.. too be noticed, you have to be dramatic. save your money. a lot of money. rent a really good recording studio. have your material ready to be recorded......studio time is very expensive. out of your best studio recordings, have one or two transferred to cd's. send the cd's to another country...like england radio stations. if you have "that sound", the dj's in england will quickly pick up on it and play your cd. the music papers will pick up most music played. and the rest is history. you will never make a dent in american music, unless you are a hit in another country. the music starts there and returns to america. why? i do not know, but since i have been in the music business for 45 years...thats the way it is. i have been a drummer for many years and have played for many popular recording artists. chet atkins, roy orbison, boots randolph and many more. good luck on your endeavor. be different and you will be noticed and always search for that special song, that special sound......it could happen!

In the U.K an Artist has to sell 300,000 albums to become platinum, But in the U.S an artist has to sell 1,000,000 this is due to the size of the country and varys all around the world.
