Welcome to the world of motorhomes. The first thing you should know is this: When you buy one motorhome, you have essentially committed yourself to buying two motorhomes. The first motorhome is the one you buy and use. The second motorhome is all of the parts you will buy to replace the first motorhome piece by piece. The second thing you should know is that it is NOT the chassis (engine, drivetrain, suspension, etc.) that will cost you, it's the coach. A motorhome coach is a house that is constantly subject to gale-force winds and earthquake-level vibration. It's no wonder that bits and pieces of it fail frequently. Age and mileage are less important factors in motorhomes than how well previous owners have kept up with maintenance and repairs. I recently owned an 1986 Dolphin (built on a Toyota pickup chassis). The chassis portion gave me almost no trouble (other than normal maintenance). The coach portion needed all kinds of repairs and upgrades. A few key things to look for: ---Do all of the major subsystems work? If the refrigerator is broken, or the heater fan doesn't turn on, etc., you can be fairly sure that the previous owner skimped on upkeep. You'll probably be in for a lot of niggling repairs. ---Is there any evidence of water damage? Water leaks are perhaps the #1 problem with motorhomes. Proper maintenance of the roof and various seals (esp. around the windows) is needed to prevent them. If there have been one or two small leaks, don't worry about it. But any more evidence than that and you may have rotting inside the walls. That's a *big* repair expense. ---Check the PRODUCTION DATE on the tires. Even if they have plenty of tread left, tires that are more than 6-8 years old are a blowout waiting to happen (yes, I have personal experience with this) http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=11 Here are a couple of articles that you might find helpful: http://www.answerbag.com/articles/How-to-Evaluate-Motorhomes/a73c0ca2-ed1f-d3ea-6d68-d34a01b5dac0 http://www.phrannie.org/phredex.html Good luck. I hope you find a motorhome that brings you a lot of joy (as mine did). . . .
