  • Using the Navy website the following was found... The short answer is 78 (72 active and 6 under construction) The long answer is that there are two different types of submarines... The Attack Sub, which is designed to seek & destroy enemy subs & surface ships. The Ballistic Missile Sub, which is a nuclear-powered sub armed with long-range strategic missles. As for as Attack Sub's, there is 1 Virginia Class (5 under construction), 2 Seawolf Class (1 under construction), & 51 Los Angelos Class. As for as the Ballistic Missile Sub there are currently 18 active. According to the Navy website these are the only two types of submarines and they are used for multi purpose. • As an update to this question, four years after it was initially posted: Ohio class SSBN's: 14 Ohio class SSGN's: 4 (converted SSBN's) Los Angeles class SSN's: 45 Seawolf class SSN's: 3 Virginia class SSN's: 5 This totals up to 71 nuclear submarines currently active at the time of this posting. In all, 197 nuclear submarines have been built and operated by the US Navy. 138 of these were SSN's and 59 SSBN's and SSGN's. 25 more Virgina class remain to be built, for a total of 222 total nuclear submarines in all. http://www.navysite.de/ssbn/index.html http://www.navysite.de/submarine.htm NOTE: There is an error in the second link. The USS Narwhal (SSN 671) is listed in error as a Sturgeon class submarine. The Narwhal was a one-of-a-kind nuclear submarine in her own class. Her hull design was unique, and so was her propulsion plant.
