I can see both of those happening. I like to hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

No the thing with optomism is..... You are content with what you get, and if it didnt turn out the way you expected it...thats fine, next time ill learn from this...But if you get something real good, your like WHOOO!!!!

Of course. If you EXPECT anything, you can, and probably will be disappointed. My philosophy (optimistic) is "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst, and expect nothing." See my description of it, here: http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/3292390

I think the things that allow a person to be optimistic is that they know they can handle anything that comes down the pike. They have learned that people and life aren't perfect and have made peace with it. Once you free yourself from those types of expectations, it becomes much easier to be optimistic. You probably won't ever be deliriously happy, but life is easier. +5

The old saying, "Expect the worst and hope for the best". That way you only get pleasent surprises. +4

Im pretty sure the word you were looking for was pessimism, or possibly skepticism. Optimism means that a person intrinsically is open for new ideas at any given moment.
