It's not based on individuals, it's based on an age group. When you're younger you pay into it, then when you reach retirement age you're supposed to receive it. Whether or not you actually ever paid into it doesn't matter.

This is true. Social Security pays benefits to those who have loss income due to retirement, disability and death. The Social Security Administration also administers benefits for the Supplement Security Income program which is a needs based program for those who have not paid into SS or get very little from SS. People get SS and SSI very confused.

SS disability or regular retirement is for the ones who have paid into it. There is also a needs based SSI (Supplemental Security Income) for those who have not paid into SS or have not worked long enough to have enough credits for SSDI which is SS disability insurance. Those who qualify for SSI usually get Medicaid health coverage too. You will find lots of info on the www.ssa.gov site. That is where I started and most of my questions were answered on the pages of that site.

Yes and it was like this when it first came out too. Many were approved, though they never paid a dime. But the real help comes form the disability to familes whose kids are messed up.
