  • Are you serious!? Charities just for atheists? No - we're not that small minded; we see a charitable cause and decide whether or not to donate based on the reason for need not the religion!
  • It wouldn't make sense for there to be charitable organizations run by atheists, or at least known as an atheist charity the same way there are, for instance, Christian charities. This is because atheists do not see themselves as part of one big group. However, there are atheists who run charitable organizations or work for them.
  • Heck no! Atheists don't have the time for charity. What with all the time spent cooking up and eating babies and raping young Christian women (and men!), We atheists barely have time for our daily dalliance with the devil. (Sarcasm Mode Off) While not an atheist, I do not believe in a god or gods, so I feel sufficiently removed from religion as a whole to feel more than a little offended by this question. As much as you may not like this fact, charity wasn't invented by Christians. Its been around since long before the man himself ever trod this grassy lump. As an unbeliever I have donated time to local Rest Homes, Run a charity BBQ for five years (raising over $10,000) and have a payroll deduction for over $500 per year for the last 3 years going to United Way. My wife though nominally RC, supports Canadian Diabetes Society and all our empty bottles are picked-up and cashed in by a friend to support a local animal rescue service. I have worked with many "Christians" who don't have this kind of time and/or money for charity. So you can possibly see why a question that suggests that you have achieved the lofty age of 19 without realizing that atheists aren't necessarily the anti-Christ, worries me about the state of education in your neck of the woods (as well as insulting me on a personal level). Hope this helps.
  • There are plenty of charities which have no faith affiliation. Almost certainly some of these were started by atheists. But since atheists have no special way of marking themselves out, nor any desire to mark the charities as "theirs", it is very difficult to find out. Since atheism is an absence of belief, one doesn't mark it out, and one doesn't reject any believers who might wish to support one's good cause. I can find no sign that the founder of Medecins sans Frontieres (one of the more effective charities), Bernard Kouchner, who is of Jewish/Protestant background and was a Communist in his youth, has ever been religiously active. I don't say he *is* atheist, but he looks it, and founded a major charity.
  • Sure! And many atheists are very generous people. Some of the good charities not affiliated with a religion include: Vietnam Veterans of America http://www.scheduleapickup.com/cc/index.wp The International Red Cross http://www.icrc.org/ Paws http://www.paws.org/ New York Foundation for the Arts http://www.nyfa.org/ Amnesty International http://www.amnesty.org/
  • Probably. Personally I'm more inclined to give to the local homeless shelter. They're christian based, but they do good works.
  • Andrew Carnegie was an atheist. Most small town libraries in America were funded by and are Carnegie libraries. Carnegie Hall. Bill Gates of the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, which works on many things including diseases in third world countries and poverty. Warren Buffet who is atheist and who donated most of his fortune to the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation.
  • Evidently not.
