Atheism, being disbelief in a deity, is by definition a stance on religion.
-
The category is religion... it deals with all topics related to religion, including the lack thereof. Atheism is a belief that God doesn't exist. What would be a better category?
-
Because theists insist that atheists actually do believe in a religion, they are just putting on a public face of atheism. According to theism, it isn't that atheists actually think Deity does not exist, its that they would prefer that Deity doesn't exist. I understand that the anti-homosexual brigade uses a similar hypothesis when considering the existence of homosexuality. When you have the majority you can claim all kinds of ludicrous things and have them taken seriously. Thus Atheism is lumped in with Theism.

I wish it was under Philosophy or something like that. I don't consider it a religion, it's really more of a philosophy or way of thinking about life. I can see why they put it there, because it is related to religion, but I think that the topic would be much less contentious if it was listed elsewhere.

Atheism has all the tenets of religion(eg strongly held beliefs, strong attempts to evangelise), without belief in a deity.
-
because it's a belief...and people relate that to religion. plus nowadays...athiesm is a religion
-
As an atheist, I agree with its placement. If it were in the "Religions A-Z" subcategory I would take issue.
-
if there's an entire category on theistic beliefs, then it would seem logical that an entire category be designated for athiestic beliefs. it probably ought to parallel theistics or be placed in philosophy. good question!!! :)
-
Well it does seem kinda funny, but its there because it pertains to religion.
-
Religion is an umbrella term for "belief system". Replace religion with belief system, and it makes perfect sense.
