  • Blue to match the color of the sky, where the gods dwelt and where they believed the "victim" was going after being sacrificed.
  • The mayans knew that blood was blue before air hit it - so if they painted a victim blue - you would not see so much blue blood before they did what they did.
  • Also, they were sacrificing to the rain god, Chaak. The blue pigment was the same colour as a cloudless sky; when the sky was cloudless and they needed rain, they would paint the victim the same colour to give to the rain god, in the hope that the colour of the sky would be changed and rain would come. They sacrificed them by tossing them into a water sinkhole, which would also be the same colour. Pottery was alao painted the same colour before being dumped in the sinkhole as well.
