Probably because i've heard of several people that got sick when they smoked a cigarette while on the patch. It's basically the same thing.

It didn't for me or my old roomate, but I'm pretty sure you shouldn't follow my example as if I remember right there are warnings on the package....personally if I could do it again I'd just follow the instructions.
