He's 23, for god's sake. He wasn't doing it during the Olympics, as far as I've heard, so it has nothing to do with his career. I think people should get their panties out of a twist over something that's so totally harmless and ridiculous. At least it wasn't cocaine, right?
-
Not at all, there are many others things to worry about than a choof...
-
No.. I don't think anyone should be criticized for smoking marijuana out of any type of instrument. (I've had to smoke out of a toilet paper roll before when you're desperate you get creative). . . weed has been around for a LONG time.. you'd think people would be used to it by now.
-
Yes. Whether he likes it or not, he is an icon and role model to millions of kids around the world, and as such should set the right example. He can't expect to enjoy the glory without also carrying the responsibilities.
-
No, because the smoke from a bong is usually cooler than the smoke from a pipe or a j. ;) If he was serious about getting endorsement deals from mainstream sponsors, then I think criticism regarding the impact this incident will have on that is warranted. However, if he's cool with doing ads for NORML and High Times instead, then no probs. :p
-
Absolutely not...he keeps himself in shape!
-
I do think that he deserves criticism, ONLY because he is a spokesman for many companies who have invested big bucks in his clean image. He has a responsibility to maintain that. However, the news articles reference the fact that Phelps was "throwing back shots" and "drinking all night" and that he also took a bong hit of marijuana, but the criticism is all about the marijuana. It's (apparently) perfectly acceptable for Phelps to get completely trashed drunk, just as long as he doesn't smoke marijuana. I think that's ridiculous. Alcohol destroys far more lives than marijuana does. If he's going to have to maintain a clean image for companies to endorse him, that should include alcohol *and* drugs.
-
yeah...he should have used a vaporizer. They're much healthier. At least he didn't use blunts or joints...such a waste.
-
Lol, he's probably gained a whole new fan-base :o)
-
There is nothing wrong with smoking pot. It is better for you then alcohol. You don't see stoned people going out and smashing into other cars or worse. There is no physical withdrawal from it. There are millions upon millions of people who smoke it in the United States without a problem. Oh and don't forget out first flag in America was made from hemp. The media needs to stop following the governments feeling toward a harmless drug. Just take a look at polls online and you will see the peoples real belief behind Michael smoking or anyone smoking. Good day
-
Being that none of his sponsors didn't seem to mind, I don't see why anyone else should be bothered. The only difference between him and the average 23 year old is that he is a professional athlete, so he's always in the spotlight. Who knows how many 23 year olds are as high as a kite RIGHT NOW! And when you think about it, the average athlete like football players and basketball players compete every year. Michael Phelps technically is on the big stage every 4 years. He's basically in the off-season for the next 4 years until the next Olympics, so let the dude smoke!
-
As long as he's not hypocritical about it of course not. When are people going to grow up and stop pretending that this matters?
-
No, because what if you did something bad, would you want people criticizing you for it? I wouldn't want it to happen to me. Matthew 7:12(NIV) So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.
-
Yes, a vaporizer is much more effective.
-
No. A bong is the best way to smoke marijuana.
-
Only if he fails to observe bong etiquette.
-
They criticze Vick went he got caught with weed and when Josh Howard admitted to smoking weed the whole Dallas sports world seemingly wanted to drop bricks on a his heads. I really don't care what people do but im some people are paid to GIVE THEIR OPINION! So it will be only just that those paid to give their criticism do it to him because they've down it to others just because he is viewed as the golden boy doesn't mean he should just slip through cracks of the media.
-
I really don't care what he does. He isn't running for public office, he isn't charged with inforcing the laws, outside the swimming pool, he is a private citizen. Leave him alone.
-
I guess it could be argued that he is a role model for a lot of kids, but I can't personally see anything wrong with smoking a bong
-
Ha, If people want to idolize him and worship him, they should accept him fully. He's still an amazing swimmer, He still has the Gold medal, hows a hit of weed going to change that. I'm sure if you put him in the pool he'd still kick all those other guys asses. Im almost 100% sure its not becuase hes done something illegal, Becuase a lot of things are illegal. Crossing the solid line in a parking spot is illeal, I'm sure that sheriff has pulled that one. Oh it doesn't harm anyone you say? Nethier does Micheal taking one hit of Marijuana any more harmful. Let's not make a big deal out of something very little just to win a war on drugs America..
-
Michael Phelps is not above the law.
-
No. He's human. He's still young. It's pathetic if people are criticising him and ridiculing him. Some people can idolise him, but he did his best for himself as he should have done, and he didn't do it for people to idolise him and then criticise him.
-
No. What he does is his own business. But just like other sports stars and/or entertainers, he shouldn't be looked at as a role model for todays youth.
-
Yes and No.... Yes because he is an American role model for some people and he represents us in the Olympics. I know this may sound weird, but do we want America to look bad and set bad examples. The No part is that he is young, and people do silly and kinda, well... stupid stuff as teens/young adults. But honsetly leave him alone. Plain and Simple. Just stay out of peoples lives and life would be a hell of a lot easier for all of us..........
-
He did kind of look like an amateur, so he should be criticized for that. He should also be criticized for letting someone take his picture. Finally, Yes, he should be criticized for smoking pot.
-
Wow, Michael Phelps smokes weed, this is some shattering news..... but guess who else smoked pot?????????????????????????? Everyone!!!!!!!........ Boring news. Just another story for people to make more money. The media knows this is junk.
-
He should be criticized for not getting his teeth fixed and getting a better haircut...He's rich!
-
Yes, mostly because he is an athlete and he is a role model to young people. he is also an olympic medalist. Smoking pot is nothing when your achievements do not involve winning 8 gold medals for your sports skills. I'm sorry, he needs to be criticized for his own good. Drugs never got anyone anywhere that is good and healthy.
-
You know what, he is a swimmer. He can swim fast. so the f*ck what if he smokes pot. i dont smoke pot, keep in mind. someone who can swim fast should never be anyones hero. And if speedo feels like they have to pay a fast swimmer lots of money to pose in some trunks and live a perfect life forever, then they are mistaken. bottom line.
-
what do you mean "from a bong"? he wouldve gotten criticized if he smoked it from anything! a blunt, a joint, a piece, or anything else im forgetting. of course i dont see why its a BAD thing as long as his swimming performance doesnt suck dick afterwards. of course its illegal, but who gives a shit except for the cops
-
That picture was taken long before the 2008 Olympics. Old picture. Old news. Old and harmless drug. Get over your Old conservative selves.
-
Of course not. This business about "sports heroes" is bunk. It has been since good old hard drinking, fun loving Babe Ruth was the king of baseball. I suggest that we boycott the company that rescinded his contract on the basis of an old picture. I'd rather have a successful athlete smoke a little dope than try to convert kids to the current brand of fundamentalist thinking.
