Wiring isn't my strong area, but this sounds to me like your wiring is corroded. Somewhere along the way, a wire for your lights is contacting another part. This part is taking a lot of voltage and grounding the wire. Therefore it ups the load on the wire, up to the battery, and to the alternator. Check the wires going to your lights. Make sure the coating is intact. On a vehicle this old, salt, etc. can commonly corrode wiring. This is just my guess - I may be wrong.

ok, im not much of a car expert but....is the engine grounded, casue this almost samething happened to my 84 silverado too, if that isnt the case then maybe you got some old wires or somehting is grounded out somewhere
