  • Originally, it was probably hacking into computer systems to see what info they could get. Then someone decided they could get money. That's the hacking side of it. As for viruses... SOME of them could have been to set up some of the above. Way back when I was in college, a friend and I (as intellectual brainstorming ONLY) figured out how to introduce a program to our college system, and they ONLY way they'd have been able to stop it was to shut the whole thing down. It also probably goes back to the "Delete *.*" DOS command that many would try to get their "friends" to do for fun. Put the two together and that's probably where things started. Some people do it for intellectual excitement. Some do it to cause damage. Some do it to try to stop government computers. Some do it for reasons no one will ever know. It's kinda like trolls, here and elsewhere on the 'net. Some do it for fun, some for what they think is a reason, and some to cause chaos.
