I grew up in a very religious, faithful Lutheran family. I am still a dyed in the wool Lutheran and believe in and celebrate the birth of Christ with great reverence and appreciation. It is, indeed, the reason for Christmas! However, this does not and should not diminish the beauty and magic of Christmas and Santa Claus. I'm 55, and my kids have never and will never hear me make a disparaging remark about the existence of Santa. I get angry at people who "refuse to lie" to their children about it, or those who refuse Santa because it's too commercial. Phooey. How dare they steal that from their children? As a devout Christian, I also cringe at the over commercialization and at Christmas decorations out in stores before Halloween is even over...but that still shouldn't diminish Chrismas spirit. Please read, if you haven't already, the wonderful old article, "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus." It's beautiful, and captures the whole thing very well. Just Google it. Good luck, and please, if you never believe anything else you ever read, don't ever allow the spirit of Christmas, including Santa, to leave you!
