If we were allowed to hit our children without getting in trouble by the Law (the way my mother use to hit me when i was little with the belt) would you do it?

I dont believe I would hit my kids even then. Why would anyone. Just because a parent did it to us when we were young? I know I didnt like it at all and dont think it really teaches you anything so I dont feel it would be any different for my kids.

I like to think not, but the truth is that I probably would. To my eternal shame, I was very hard on my children as they were growing up. I now see that part of the problem was that I was simply behaving as my father had behaved toward me. Another large part of the problem is that I was selfish and wanted to make them change their behaviors, rather than being willing to spend the time and effort to help them change without the spankings. I never abused them, but I was very harsh. : ((

I would proabably belt someone elses kid. You know, like the screaming brats on the plane. OY. But seeing as i'm a seventeen year old single kid, I can't say for certain, but I proabably wouldn't even if I could. :)

I don't think so. Maybe a little smack on their butts every once in awhile, but I would never use a belt or make their ass cheeks red!

There is a difference in spanking to discipline and spanking to abuse. We do spank our children when a serious disobedience has come into play. I was spanked as a child, but NEVER abused!

The bible states spare the rod spoil the child. I am not saying it is right to beat until black and blue all over but a good swat on the ass is what kids these days need!

Are you talking about spanking because you can spank kids in America as long as it is reasonable force and yes I would do it, it teaches kid early how bad hoices create bad consequences.

No. I don't favor that sort of conditioning type of punishment. I'd rather have them learn the reasoning behind why things are right or wrong, even if it takes longer.

you can spank with a belt on the buttcheeks but thats about it, and if you are excessive and leave marks, it is considered abuse. you cant punch, slap, kick choke your kids.. which is some of the discipline i/we received. but swatting on the bottom ONCE OR TWICE or popping on the hand? ive done it. i dont make corporal a regular form of discipline. i pretty much have my kids in check and i dont have to hit them. i did spank my son last week for spanking his sister though.

No, I've seen and personally experienced enough child abuse----why would I want to relive it upon my own children? Physical punishment is traumatic for a young child. There are better ways of punishing children than using belts and an open hand.

Yes, I would spank the child with a belt but only one or two swats. Anything more I think is too much. But, that also depends on the age of the child. A 2 year old doesnt need to be spanked with a belt. An open hand lightly on the butt does the same thing.

Getting hit by my parents was not only hurtful, it was totally humiliating. There is absolutely no way I'd ever put my daughter through that. There are other ways to discipline without being abusive.
