Why don't Muslim leaders make more of an effort to publicly condemn terrorism, so they can separate themselves from it and defend Islam?

Maybe because by doing so they would acknwoledge that terrorism is exclusively linked to Islam,which is wrong.No religion is fully responsible to terrism and it is prejudice and misinformation to think so.

Perhaps they fear retaliation for doing so...perhaps some of them have relatives that are involved and are torn. Their world is so different from our world. There are many layers of life there..for us, something is either right or wrong..you're either a coward or you stand up and are willing to be counted. For them it may not be that cut and dried, black or white. :)

Unlike Western nations, most Muslim nations are very oppressive. It would never cross their leaders mind attempt to appease the masses. As long as they are in control of the government and its military: They're good.

What makes you think that they haven't? Perhaps a better question to ask is why Western media don't report it when this happens?

If the government of the US is any indication of how it protects and defends itself against whack jobs, we're all in trouble. Gawd knows we have our share and you don't see the government doing anything to denounce them or keep them on a leash, on the contrary, they go out of their way to accommodate them and cater to them
