They use it to pay for the land, the bills and all that. If they are a growing church, to expand. It helps with trips and events and all. I imagine some would go to charities. Each sentence shorter than the last!

Dumbass downraters, as if they can deny that the church lies about why they want money? Historically, the Catholic Church extorted massive sums for the process of literally buying salvation - see "Plenary Indulgences" - in the Middle Ages, they told people that they could get closer to God by donating as much as possible to the church. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indulgence#Abuses Nowadays, they sort of do the same thing in more subtle forms, in some churches; Most however - since church attendance is very low - will tell you upfront that they are having trouble paying rent.

In my particular church, we pay tithing, which is 10% of our income. We do not pass a collection plate. Why are we asked to donate tithes to the church? To me, it is an outward expression to God that money is not the most important thing in my life--God is. It takes a lot of faith to give 10% of my income to the church, but I feel that I am richly blessed for doing this. I am also happy to help pay to cover the cost of all of the expenses that comes with operating a church (except for the salary of our local church leaders--they serve without a salary from the church). I also see every day the good causes to which my money goes. I trust my church compeletely with my donation. (BTW...I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints...a.k.a. the Mormon Church)

Its so the church can stay a church. The priests need to eat, the property isnt free, and sometimes they need more body of Christ.

To pay the salary of the minister, the utility bills, gas and payments for any vehicles the church owns, church sponsored activites and many other things. A church has the same basic expenses as any business. A church is considered a not for profit and as such must follow the principles of fund accounting. Basically this means that you either give money to the general fund, to be used as the church sees fit, or you contribute to a specific fund. If you donate money to pay for a community outreach program, for example, any money received for this purpose could only be used for that purpose. Both my Father and Father In Law are church deacons. Both are often involved in how money is spent or more commonly how the church will overcome cash shortages.
