Its a bit stupid really. Athiest means believes in no religion and is sure religion is wrong about God and that, in my mind anyway. Really, its just a general term to sum up a load of people without a religion. The thing is, athiests don't do things religions do, and there is no common belief, just the same disbelief. I don't feel forced into anything, I just think its weird people thing of no religion as a religion.

Well, according to one definition of a religion that I found, it is "A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion." So nearly anything can be a religion as long as your 'zealous' about it I guess. But, no one has forced me into anything, which is how I became an atheist, by refusing to be forced into believing something and forming my own thoughts on the world and universe. Not all atheists believe the same thing either, so grouping us all together is lack of understanding of us.

Atheists believe in no God. Not no religion. To be a religion, I personally think you have to meet with others in that religion once in a while. In my opinion, I don't think Atheism is a religion.

It's ridiculous...One of the things I really like about being an atheist is that I have seperated myself from any type of organized religions. I love the freedom that atheism gives me and it follows my beliefs very well. Turning atheism into a sell out group based on power and money would ruin it for me....maybe then I would just have to become a satanist.

Unfortunately some people struggle to recognise individuals and feel the 'need' to classify a group of non-believers in theism into a religion. Religion is so important to these people that they cannot really imagine someone not being in a religion and so must define atheists in this manner. I personally think religions are used as a method of controlling people (bring on the trolls *cringe*) and so by claiming that atheists are all part of a religion can irritate people because they perceive it as an attempt to control the individuals.

I dislike it intensely. It leads people to assume certain things about atheists as a group. There was a question on here once that said "Why do atheists want religious education banned in schools?" Which annoyed me a bit because my reaction was "I don't!". I think that some atheists have become just as dogmatic and intolerant as the religions they are opposed to. I really don't want to be part of that.

I dont care & I dont feel 'forced' personnally. It is unfortunate that the boxing of atheism into a specific identity is occuring, but this probably makes it fairer to other truly religious people who have suffered such extended assumptions and boxing for many years.(& esp post 9/11).

how can atheism be a religion? That is retarted. Athiests dont believe in anything but themselves. Therefore, theoretically, it is not even an ism! "i don't believe in beatles i just believe in me" -john lennon- greatest athiest of all time. afterall he was the walrus

Perhaps you meant to discuss the concept of nihilism? http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=nihilism

I don't think atheism is a religion at all. The government (UK) doesn't care and other religions spend time trying to force people into their religion, not into anything else.
-
who says it's a religion? What gov't? News to me.

Atheism has nothing to do with not believing in religion, it simply means without god. Buddhist do not have a god, therefore an atheist could be a buddhist. As a general rule though you will find that atheists avoid any organised religion. Also to surgest that atheist can be organised in some way is a joke. Organising atheists is like herding cats.

It's funny, really. They don't even think about what they're saying.

Atheism is one singular belief, it cannot be a religion as the definition of religion according to www.rhymezone.com is: Definitions of religion: noun: a strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny noun: institution to express belief in a divine power Atheism is the disbelief in this, therefore the actual opposite of religion. There is no point to atheism no agenda no threat no set of rules, atheism is merely the disbelief in god, not the disbelief in religion one could say that Buddhists are atheists, and vice versa as an atheist i could be a Buddhist and still adhere the singular factor which governs whether one is an atheist or not. The definition of atheism cannot be forced or pressured anywhere, no more so than anyone can change the definition of any word. So in short No i don't feel that.

uhmmm.. Haven't you noticed all the new "atheist" churches being built in your town? Atheism is NOT a religion, never was and never will be. Nobody ever "forced me" into a religion except the courts used to force people to go to AA meetings where they preach the "higher power" nonsense at EVERY meeting and i was thrown in jail because i refused to go. I quit drinking all by my little lonesome WITHOUT the help of my "higher power", my higher oranges, my higher door knobs, my higher bottles or my higher puddle of piss on the floor..

Atheism is not a religion, however in legal terms it can be classified as such. Legalese often uses words in different meanings. For instance, a corporation can be classified as a person in some laws (eg ownership of property) but not in others (entitlement to vote) - in legal terms, a corporation is a legal person but not a natural person. Similarly, atheism can be classified as a religion when it comes to the right of freedom of belief.
-
its not a religion... I was under the impression that you needed a god or higher being to be a religion

I don't know who can declare something a religion. I know that may religious people try to bring atheism down to their level by calling it "a kind of religion" but they can call atheism any name they like - it won't make it true. And I find it a funny tactic. It's a tacit admission that they have the weaker position. I know what I know and that's enough for me. +5
