  • Haven't you been around before asking this question. Are you trying to get an OK to practice plural marriage? You can move to another country, accept their ways and then practice it. Good luck! Dream on!
  • then I apologize, it was another. The "other branch" was Joseph Smith's? I've known Mormons who are looking for permission to indulge in polygamy for the supposed sexual benefits.
  • In the RLDS BofM 2:39 [LDS BofM 2:30], there are those who have contended that the word “otherwise” means that the people are to be monogamous except when God “commands his people otherwise” to practice polygamy for the purpose of raising up a righteous seed. There is another interpretation of this same verse. If the Lord will “raise up seed,” then he will command his people. “Otherwise,” if they won’t listen to his commandments, they must obey these things that are merely written. Whether written or spoken, they both will say the same thing — “For there shall not any man among you have save it be one wife; and concubines he shall have none: For I, the Lord God, delighteth in the chastity of women.” Also note that the phrase “these things” is plural. This would imply that he is talking about more than just monogamy. A careful study of the whole context indicates that Jacob is also warning the people against pride. This interpretation agrees with: RLDS BofM Jacob 2:55 [LDS BofM Jacob 3:5] which states: For they [the Lamanites] have not forgotten the commandments of the Lord, which were given unto our fathers, that they should have, save it were one wife... RLDS BofM Ether 4:48 [LDS BofM Ether 10:5] which states: "And it came to pass that Riplakish did not do that which was right in the sight of the Lord, for he had many wives and concubines, and did lay that upon men’s shoulders which was grievous to be borne; yea, he did tax them with heavy taxes; and with the taxes he did build many spacious buildings." On Jan 2, 1838, a revelation given to Joseph Smith indicated that he was to go to Ohio where God would give him God's law [D&C Section 38] After reaching Ohio, a revelation was received that stated: Thou shalt love thy wife with all thy heart, and shalt cleave unto her and none else. [RLDS D&C 42:7d; LDS D&C 42:24] There is a similar statement in RLDS D&C 42:3a-3b; LDS D&C 42:15-16. To take a verse totally out of context and put a spin on it that totally disagrees with other accepted scriptures would indicate that there is some fault with the spin.
  • I'm a member of the RLDS church and believe plural marriage is evil. I agree with RLDS Guy's interpretation. Joseph and Hyrum Smith stated in the 'Times and Seasons' newspaper Feb. 1, 1844 the following: "NOTICE. As we have lately been credibly informed that an Elder of the Church of Jesus Christ, of Latter-day Saints, by the name of Hiram Brown, has been preaching Polygamy, and other false and corrupt doctrines, in the county of Lapeer, state of Michigan. This is to notify him and the Church in general, that he has been cut off from the church, for his iniquity; and he is further notified to appear at the Special Conference, on the 6th of April next, to make answer to these charges. JOSEPH SMITH, HYRUM SMITH, Presidents of said church" Wilford Woodruff, LDS/Mormon president, testified in the 1893 Temple Lot Case in Missouri. On page 306 & 307 of the abstract of the case, he is questioned about Book of Mormon, Jacob chapter 2 and polygamy in general. Mr. Woodruff admitted error in the LDS/Mormon "otherwise" interpretation for supporting polygamy and raising up righteous seed.
