Jail, among other possibilities.

They would get all their assets taken away as well as confinement and having to owe alot of money to the government. I think this happened with Al Capone because my grandpap fished with him on the IL river back in the day before the feds bombarded his house for this reason!

Actually, that would depend upon whether or not you have a social security number, as well as whether or not you filled out a W-4 form for work. Let's attack the first part. If you have a social security number, you have voluntarily become a slave of the Federal Government. Remember, slavery was abolished...for african americans...not for the citizens of the US...oh wait, we're not actually citizens of the US though...technically, we're only foreign listed citizens of the Virgin Islands. As soon as you file a 1040 tax return, you are automatically listed in the IRS database as a resident of the Virgin Islands. According to Federal Tax Code, United States citizens cannot have their labor taxed. (this excerpt cut and pasted from www.imfdecoder.com) The scheme begins by leading you to believe that you have a legal requirement to have and use a Social Security Number. Believing in this, you apply for a number or your parents apply for one for you. You then enter that number on your very first tax return and file it, perhaps right out of high school or college, believing once again that filing is required by law. Without realizing the legal significance of your actions, you just voluntarily created the presumption of being a “taxpayer.” But are you? You see, the one-word legal term “taxpayer”—with no space between “tax” and “payer”— is defined at section 7701(a) (14) of the Internal Revenue Code as “any person subject to any internal revenue tax.” But who is made subject? Only those whom Congress has made liable to pay a particular tax—in this case, the “income” tax. So who then is made liable? Search the entire code and the only liability statute you’ll find for “income” tax is section 1461, which applies solely to the withholding of tax from foreigners, not from citizens. Yet over a hundred million working adult Americans pay billions of dollars annually in income taxes, or have them withheld from their paychecks, with absolutely no legal requirement anyone can locate! Does that help? I got really pissed off, personally. Feel free to contact me at my email for more references to this insidious scheme by Big Brother Government. And no, I personally don't care if they do read the internet...I want to help people get out from under the yoke of greedy politicians, and despicable Gov't agents, with an agenda designed to keep us in perpetual slavery. They are forced to pay interest, fines, and perhaps spend time in jail, unless they are Obama's choice to be the Secretary of the Treasury and in effect over the IRS which is responsible for collecting said taxes, then all is forgiven and they get the job.

I tend to believe it depends on how much money and influence the person wields. We were informed via the news recently of several high profile people who failed to pay taxes. My first thought is, how have they managed to avoid paying such HUGE amounts for so long? Less influential people would have the IRS crawling up their arse LONG before now.

Well ... The IRS can come in and freeeze your bank accounts, take your assets including the house, furniture, and your car .... as well as ANYTHING else that you might own including the jewelry on your person ... IF you are still unable to meet your tax obligation ; you can do Prison time ...

There are (by somebody's count) 110 different "taxes" at the federal level alone. To add to the confusion, they don't have distinct names. Let's assume you mean individual income tax. More confusion: "refuse to pay" might mean not signing a return, or it might mean signing a return saying that you owe but then not paying. If the latter, the IRS can "lien" and "levy" your assets. They might need to get a court order first.
