  • Yes and no. Foods that have very little nutritional value beyond starches, sugars and negligible amounts of dietary fibre and have a high glycemic index (such as white breads, common pastas, cookies, etc) can cause bloating in some people, particularly people with a sensitivity to sugars. such foods are digested very quickly and often produce gas as a side effect. Foods that have starches but are rich nutritionally (whole grain foods, numerous vitamins, water, high dietary fibre) have a lower glycemic index. As such, they are less likely to cause bloating in people because of the time it takes for the body to digest them.
  • High carb foods absorb a lot of water. In doing so their volume increases making you feel more full and bloated.
