They may not know that, though it is easier to buy them on the street than have to put up with sales tax!

Hm. I live in Florida, and this time of year you can hardly pass a street corner without seeing a portable produce stand set up in a pickup truck or trailer parked on the side of the road. They're small family farms selling their abundance, and I find their produce is often fresher, riper, and priced MUCH lower than the produce at the supermarket (which was probably plucked half-ripe and shipped in from Chile or something). Perhaps the people selling oranges on the street have an abundance of their own family trees, and wish to make a little extra money by selling their produce at a discount?
-
Where I live the street vendors are selling WallaWalla sweet onions or cherries. I think they get a good discount from the farmers since alot of them work illegally without a greencard. Or maybe it's because they have a small family farm like someone before mentioned. Who knows? I just might ask next time I stop for some cherries though.

Why do people in New York sell food in public? Don't they know that people can get them at restaurants?
-
easy cash for illegals I guess. I read an article about those oranges. THey are actually stolen. THe theives are called juice bandits. THey are the oranges good enough for juice, and taste ok, but dont look good enough to sell in the grocery stores. So when they're waiting in the bin to be moved to be made into juice, sometimes they're stolen and sold on street....thats what I read about 10 or 15 years ago anyway.

why mexicans? why couldnt you say people? that was very offensive to me. And i've seen other ethnicities do the same...its called a JOB!! some are fortunate enough to have great jobs in closed doors and some dont. They just try to have a living to support their families just like everyone else....that's what makes us human
-
because they are trying to make money..
-
Obviously they wouldn't do it if they couldn't sell the bags of oranges so someone is buying them.
-
this is a stereotype. others do the same its called a job.
-
Maybe you should tell them that
-
They know that some people simply cannot say no. Same goes for people who stand in intersections collecting for charities. I can say no but always watch around me and many, many people cannot ignore them but instead roll down the window and give or buy whatever they are selling.
-
No se...
-
Because often part of their salary is in the produce they harvested. They dont own a store, and supermarkets wont buy it from them. I always buy oranges/mangoes/cherries from them. It usually costs less and is very fresh! straight from the farm. No sitting in a refrigerated truck, then in boxes in the store.

Why in LA do people sell french fries on the street, don't they know people can get them from McDonalds?
-
There are a number of supermarkets who started life when one salesman started by selling from a street stall. Albeit a long time ago. Pile 'em high, sell 'em cheap may still work today.
-
Yes they know they are sold at the supermarket. They also sell cheaper and fresher produce than the supermarket and need the money more so people buy from them. They're not stupid and they're not exclusively hispanic either.
