  • At my uncle's family's farm during slaughtering season. Enough said.
  • This is really disgusting, so if you are squeemish, don't read this! My mother once told me that a rotting potato was the worst smell on earth. Then she stuck one under my nose to prove it. I believed her for about three years. Then one day I put a load of laundry into a dryer, and did not notice there was a half-gutted dead rabitt in it that our cat had stashed there. I turned it on and went outside for an hour. When I came back in, I knew that a rotting potato was not the worst smell on earth! I was sick for three days after cleaning that dryer. I have been in morgues, and worked in a building at a college where they incinerated laboratory animals. Neither of those smells, as bad as they were, came close to the rabitt. I think it's because the temperature in the dryer is just enough to get the bacteria going to cause accelerated decay, but not high enough to cook it. So, although I have never smelled one, I'm going to bet that the absolute worst smell, has got to be a body decaying in the summer sun. I have heard from a guy who was in Desert Storm that that is the worst smell ever. Grossed out? You were warned!
  • An animal died in an unreachable spot under a house I rented one summer and the smell was unimaginable when the temp was 100 degrees.

  • When I did the DofE award, we had to walk through some farmers field becasue we got lost. Unfortunately for us, that field happened to be full of rotting and decomposing cabbages. It was the most horrendous smell ever. We couldn't stop wretching. The ground was really squelchy and uneven too, as it'd been raining heavily, and due to the size of our bags, we were top heavy, so we kept falling over into the stuff!

  • My father is a firefighter, and he usually drives the truck. Anyways, on some calls he has to drive through part of the Everglades (swamp area in southern Florida), and the weeds grow so think it's hard to see small animals. Well, it seems my dad ran over an animal. I can't say what it was because it was mutilated by the truck. No one knew about it until several days later i was at his station and I noticed a terrible, terrible smell, as did the firefighters. We pinpointed it to its source, though almost vomitted reaching it, and found the unidentifiable animal. For the next 3 weeks, the smell, regardless of constant washing, did not fade, but instead intensified. And this story expressed the worst smell i've ever, well, smelled.

  • Came across a dead cow stuck in the mud on a ride through a neighboring rancher's property. It was in the 90s, humid, and the flies were busy and it was horrible. Once a skunk died under my parents vacation home. Between the sour dead smell and the skunk smell, it was months before anybody could go near enough to it to do something about it. And I suffer with phantom smells that are always bad smells. They are really horrible because I know they aren't really there and they are constant for hours. It's like the smells are in your brain.

I could smell the ammonia and cr@p when I was still 40 feet away. I couldn't stand to think of going in there so I waited until we were on the road again and asked dad to stop at the next gas station. I can still remember that smell to this day.
