What kind of fixture is it? Some modern light fixtures use a low voltage halogen bulb that requires a transformer mounted in the circuit. In that case, it would be normal. If you can't dtermine that, it would be safest to have an electrician take a quick look at it, just to be sure.

It's a pretty older light fixture with a standard light bulb. The switch is older too.

Thank you! I actually have an electrician coming in the morning.

* Robert Wilber Licensed Philadelphia Electrician Philadelphia License # 3516 - 16765 * Is there a doorbell chime on the wall? I had one person write who had a humming noise. It turned out the doorbell button wires were crushed together, which made the chime solenoid hum continually. * Do your lights flicker? Anything like that? Does the problem go away if you turn off the breakers at the panel? [don't turn off the main, just the sub-breakers] If you can't find it, call an electrician ... Have you used a glass or screwdriver like a stethoscope to isolate the point of highest sound level? Bees? I don't know if this helps at all, but I've had a humming in my upstairs bathroom every now and then in the middle of the night. Sounded like an electrical transformer, but it was loudest at the tub faucet. A quick turn on of the tap and it disappeared. Drove me nuts until I found it. Recurring, intermittent problem SOLVED.

if it sounds the same as when you touch a pre-amp then it is probably not much so worry about, but a speratic clicking or hissing could be worthy of a checkup... replace old switches for sure!
