It depends on whether it's the simple noun or proper noun. The former is with a silent h, while the person's name prounces the H.

For a name "Herb". For a plant used as a spice or flavoring "'erb" usually, but now and then I slip up on the latter. ;-)

If you are talking about the herbs, or erbs that you plant in your garden....without the h. If you are talking about a person named, Herb...with the H sound.

I say it like "erb" and Ooooooh did I get ripped on during my stay in the UK! They were like "what? ERB? You mean HERB?!" :p

In America (and that non-country to the North, Canada) only hillbillies, poor hicks from the upper-midwest, uneducated Brooklynites and immigrants pronounce the h. But all the Lymies, Aussies, Kiwis, and Africaners I work with say it with the hard h -- but what do they know! They also "study Maths" and "play Sport"! So obviously they haven't got a f---ing clue! We Americans outnumber all other native-English speakers combined by more than 2-1, so we win by super-majority!
