Alaska, where I have walked over the frozen tundra. The surface is extraordinarily uneven with small upthrust clumps of grass, perhaps a foot in diameter, surrounded by a loser flat plain surface. I have stood for perhaps anhour on one area and had the sensation I was standing on an island that was floating. It's true. Fortunately the time of year was September and there were no mosquitoes. I understand they are horrible over the frozen tundra.

The frozen golf course and I wonder if the sun will ever come out again here in the NW. It is not supposed to be this cold and snow so much so I keep dreaming of Spring and Sunshine and know how much I will really appreciate it when it gets here.

I think of one of the quads at my college. We referred to it as "the Frozen Tundra." If you were smart, you did everything in your power to avoid having to head to that area of campus in the winter.

After reading the answers I see the disservice perpetuated by football announcers. The Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears play on frozen dirt in freezing weather and sometimes in ice and snow. It is a far cry from real tundra. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=3480242 This is the real tundra on which football is played. Tundra is actually a mixture of frozen dirt and water (mud) which never completely thaws out because it so far North that it doesn't have the time in the short cool summers of the far north. You can't build roads on it because they will sink into the mud in the summer. There probably is a better definition. But a grass field that is green and lush (and completely thawed in the summer) is not real tundra. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tundra

This movie I recently watched in my English class ... To Build A Fire. Jack London, if I recall correctly.

Idiots who ride their trail bikes and quad-fours over it tearing it to pieces. Just steping on tundra takes 50 years to heal. What idiots do on their machines never heals ever; it is gone forever!

Ice Bowl.

I think of our beloved Chris Berman. can you imagine football without the Schwam? Not me. His nod to lambeau field will go down in history..he's the Harry carey of football. We all love john madden..But Im a super berman fan! Other than that I think of what it is...Dalls vs Green Bay..Coldest NFC Championship ever! The frozen tundra of the ice bowl where bart starr capped the go ahead TD slipping and sliding into the endzone. Man I love football!
