It's a form of indoctrination that is as old as time. Humans are pack animals and thus seek out other humans. We feel safe when we can easily identify each other and feel even better when we look the same and seem to dominate culture. This has been even more refined in this day and age by consumerism gone rampant and not only government approval but also government encouragement of society being wrapped up in things such as patriotism. I suggest you take a look at the nazi regime and it's main members, read their works and you can see how clearly documented human behavior is, and how it can be used.
